Half Moon Restaurant

I wanted to bring Jenn to a place we hadn’t been before for a great seafood meal, which she had been craving for a few weeks. Half Moon, located in Dobbs Ferry, New York, had been rated the best seafood restaurant by the readers of Westchester Magazine. “I can’t go wrong,” I thought.

Virtually empty when we arrived, we were seated in a sunny area with large windows facing the Hudson River. The evening sun really heated this section of the restaurant up as the meal progressed. By the time we were finishing dinner, we were seriously warm to the point of discomfort. Asking the waitstaff to regulate it yielded no results.

Father’s Day with the In-Laws

This past weekend Ron, myself, and our Puggle puppy Bijou took a trip to visit my in-laws in Pennsylvania for Father’s Day. It was a weekend filled with great weather and plenty of food. On the way down from New York, we took the longer route instead of jumping on the New Jersey Turnpike which is more like a parking lot on a Friday evening. As we were heading south, we drove through a cute town named Lahaska, Pennsylvania. I asked Ron if we could stop off along our way home to check out some of the eateries and shops and take a leisure Sunday, which he gladly agreed to.

Shrimp and Mango Salad

Reel Chow Original Recipe!I hardly ever make shrimp anymore. I think it’s because after Ron and I started dating we probably ate shrimp twice a week. We just enjoyed eating it. Shrimp is one of those foods with which you can have fun switching up the flavor. I went through a period of no shrimp after a while for a few years, but all things culinary come in cycles. The other day at the fish market, I saw fresh jumbo shrimp, and it gave me the craving for my old shrimp salad.

This is a recipe I have been making for years, way back while Ron and I were still dating. The shrimp is marinated in turmeric, fresh ginger, dried dill and sliced shallots with light extra virgin olive oil. It’s a spicy shrimp dish without the intense heat.

Brophy Bros. in Santa Barbara

Among our many stops on this most recent trip in California, our friends there always had great recommendations for awesome food. Photographer Kelly Kirlin and local resident told us about Brophy Bros. in Santa Barbara.

Located right on the harbor. We did not have reservations and were worried we might have to wait to be seated. Fortunately we were seated right away despite being packed at 7pm on a Tuesday night.

The menu had everything a seafood lover could imagine. I couldn’t decide between raw oysters, shrimp cocktail, crab claws, clam chowder or a seafood entree for dinner. I eventually ordered seared Ahi with coleslaw and rice and cup of clam chowder. The Ahi was lightly breaded and seared rare. The rice was fluffy and had a nice herb and butter flavor, the coleslaw was fresh and crunchy.

The lighting at Brophy Bros. was very dark. We apologize in advance for the low quality of the photos.
