Chef’n GarlicZoom Giveaway Winner

Our lucky winner, Christina!

Our lucky winner, Christina!

We are pleased to announce Christina Comitz of Redondo Beach, California as the winner of our Chef’n Giveaway! Our friends at Chef’n will be sending Christina a GarlicZoom. It’s the cleanest way we’ve found to slice fresh garlic. Read our review for full details.

Christina wrote to us the following. “I love to cook, but have little free time, and live alone, which doesn’t really give me the incentive to cook anything fancy very often. I like quick and easy meals, and am so happy to have something like the GarlicZoom to make cooking even easier for me.”

Congrats, on your win, Christina! Special thanks to our sponsor, Chef’n of Seattle.

Autumn Inspiration for the Home

This is my favorite season of the year, especially because I did not grow up with seasons in sunny Los Angeles. The Northeast has the four seasons, but the summer days are mostly too humid, spring is wet and gray with spurts of sun, and winter is really frigid. So, fall it is.

While browsing through recent publications of decor magazines, I couldn’t help but want to share some of my favorites with you, and show the aesthetic which helps make my contemporary home so warm. Here’s my autumn inspiration for the home.

Villeroy & Boch have a selection of beautiful dinnerware for autumn dinner parties. The Mandarin Buffet Plate is made of premiere bone porcelain and retails online for $72.

Home and Kitchen Decor from Anthropologie

One of my favorite retailers for home and kitchen decor is Anthropologie. I love the country kitchen look with pop of color and patterns they offer. Over the years, I have bought kitchen towels, bowls, tea pot and creamer, mugs, matching sugar bowl and creamer, aprons and glass knobs for our kitchen cabinets.

Here are a few of my favorite items of home and kitchen decor from Anthropologie.

These monogrammed mugs with our first name initials were a wedding gift from my husband’s friends, poet Kevin Pilkington and actress Celia Pilkington. We use them all the time for coffee and tea, plus they are dishwasher safe. It goes without saying we always know which mug is yours, except when we use the ones with the capital E!

Flexible Grill Basket

Even in New York, I love to grill from spring through autumn. We use a good old-fashioned charcoal barbecue. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against the propane grills, but I do find the ritual of getting the barbecue lit somewhat therapeutic. It reminds me of all the California barbecue parties my family and friends threw years ago.

One of my favorite accessories for grilling is the Flexible Grill Basket from Crate and Barrel. It’s nonstick, easy to clean, and simple to grip. It’s great for seafood, meats and vegetables. The flexibility of the basket is perfect for thicker cuts and it’s easy to turn when cooking. We got ours as a wedding present. You know you’re obsessed with great cooking when you only register at Williams & Sonoma and Crate and Barrel.

Chef’n Palm Peeler

When I was a child, every weekend my sister and I would go to my grandmother’s house in Southern California. The weekends were filled with games, bike riding, tea time, Dallas, Falcon Crest, some Golden Girls and home-cooked meals. They were weekends of great memories, and my time with her helped form my love of food made with love.

For some reason, I remember peeling a lot of russet potatoes. The peeler my grandmother gave me to use was old. It was an all-metal Australian-type peeler, most likely made of stainless steel. The blade would constantly spin and swivel with each swipe, making it difficult to peel. The skin from potatoes would get stuck, too, requiring us to stop and clean the peeler.

By the time I was using that kitchen artifact, Grandma had owned it for over thirty years. The blade wasn’t even that sharp, but it was the one and only peeler my grandma used for as long as I can remember.
